Sunless Tanning Products Versus Tanning Beds... Is there a winner?

Sunless tanning products have been around in various forms since 1960, when the first sunless quick tanning lotion was introduced into the market. Over the years, manufacturers have perfected the formula for indoor tanning products, and the range of self-tanning merchandise available today produce very convincing outcomes.

Whether it is natural sun tanning or self-tanning, the epidermis of the skin is where all the action takes place. The sun affects the deepest layer of the epidermis, while most sunless tanning items affect the outermost layer of the epidermis, requiring periodic re-application. Some popular products for tanning are:

- Cosmetic Bronzers available as powders, creams, and lotions produce an instantaneous body tan that can be easily removed with soap and water. These products are usually used as make-up.

- Tanning lotions and sprays are perhaps the most effectual products in sunless tanning. These products contain a colorless sugar called dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient, which interacts with the dead cells located in the upper layer of the epidermis to produce a temporary color change. The tan fades five to seven days after the initial application.

- Tanning Pills, which are to be ingested essentially, contain the pigment canthaxanthin. This not only turns the skin an orange-brown color, but also takes its toll on the internal organs like liver, brain, etc. Obviously, this tanning product has been associated with dangerous side effects, including Hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) and canthaxanthin retinopathy (formation of yellow deposits in the retina of the eye).

- Tanning Accelerators are lotions or pills that contain the amino acid tyrosine, which allegedly stimulate and increase melanin formation, hastening the natural tanning process. However, there is insufficient scientific data to support the validity and safety of this claim.

Although these sunless product options impart a gorgeous golden glow, they do not protect your skin from the ultraviolet radiation of the sun, so you are free to use a sunscreen before venturing out in the sun.

Tanning lotions are the best options for you to tan your skin while exposing yourself under the heat of a tanning bed. In such cases discount commercial tanning lotions will surely help you. On the contrary, there are some lotions for tanning which do not require any kind of sun exposure. Such a tanning product is also known as self-tanner or sun less tanning lotion but are not as effective as when used with a tanning bed. Sunscreen lotions are much safer to use because they do not allow the harmful rays of the sun to come in direct contact with your skin and thus prevents your skin from being burnt. This is yet another reason why a person should consider a tanning bed over laying out in the sun.

Though skin tanning is considered an essential part of physical beauty but in the actual sense, it is a mark of unhealthy or damaged skin. Tanning of the skin is still quite prevalent among the fashion conscious population of the world and in this respect, a number of fashion companies have introduced various harmless lotions for skin tanning with and without the use of a tanning bed but tanning beds are still a faster more reliable solution. It is true that these lotions are harmless but at the same time, they are unable to provide any kind of skin protection. So there are chances that your skin may be badly burnt if you choose the wrong type of lotion and protection for your skin type!

Bronzer is a specific kind of tanning lotion, which is readily available in gel formulations. Bronzers are able to produce a darker color on the skin by utilizing water-soluble dyes. Tan accelerators are another group of tanning products, which has not been able to prove itself quite effective. Tanning promoters are particular kinds of tanning products containing five methoxypsoralen. These products are not presently available in the United States because research shows that they can cause cancer in mice and excessive sunburn effects in case of humans. In addition, to all these there are tanning pills containing the drug canthaxanthrin. The consumption of these pills has been prohibited in the United States because they can lead to dangerous and threatening side effects and may even cause blindness.

However, the most effective group of tanning products include the sun less or self-tanning gels , lotions and tanning beds which are both safe and useful. According to the Food and Drug Administration, these above mentioned products contain dihydroxyacetone or DHA which are, however, quite safe for skin application except for the tanning bed which contains neither chemical. The method of application of these tanning gels and lotions are quite simple and they are best suited for those who possess medium complexions.

So as you can see there are options other than getting a tanning bed but preferably for safety and convenience a tanning bed is still a great choice over all these other remedies in my humble opinion plus it works! With some of the other products there is no guarantee that you will end up with the tan that you so desperately seek. Tanning beds are a great and easy way to achieve your year around tan!
